Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible. 

So Why Set Goals?

Goal setting can be one of the most important things you ever do in your life. Why? Because you are literally putting pen to paper and writing down what you once felt was impossible how you will make it possible. If you’re like me then you’ve got some BIG DREAMS and in order to accomplish those dreams you need to make the intangible, tangible. I ALWAYS start with the end game in mind because I was taught how you start is how you’ll finish.

Wondering How to Start?

This is my area of expertise. I realize that I am great at starting anything I set out to do because I understand that I can perfect what I’m working on as I go. When you decide to sit down and focus on your goals, the first thing you need is pen and paper, a scratch pad if you will.

• Write Out Your Ultimate Goals.
  • These goals can be broken down by timeline and also in order of importance. Some people like to write out 5 year goals, 10 years and so on. I personally prefer to write down my yearly goals, that is where I start.
• Map out a very clear and concise plan for each individual goal.
  • If sorting out your ideas feels a little overwhelming, use a mind map. Mind mapping for me helps me break down the big idea into tiny tangible ideas. I am all about what’s tangible over here. It eliminates that overwhelming feeling and helps me to see that the tasks needed to accomplish the goal aren’t so bad once broken down.

• Plan the Work, Work the Plan.
  • No Seriously, plan out each day, week and month. I like to start with a large desktop calendar. There is something about going to my desk and having a full view of how my month ahead looks.
  • Next, I use either my wall calendars or my catch all planner. This is where all of my tangible small goals are placed. Did I schedule an important call for Wednesday? Did I remember to circle back on a potential opportunity? Each small little goal leads up to big goal. Every call taken and business meeting scheduled is a potential opportunity to propel me further towards my end game.

Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.

Here’s My Favorite Part:

At the end of every month, I circle back to my Goals Journal which is where it all began. I do a thorough evaluation of whether or not I accomplished what I set out to do. My goal is to always accomplish at least 75%. If I didn’t, it shows me that I wasn’t focused enough. This is where I ask myself the tough but necessary questions:

1. What did I accomplish?
2. What did I learn?
3. How can I improve?

Finally, I take a snap shot of myself and journal about everything that transpired that month. Why do I take a photo of myself? There’s several reasons but for the purpose of this post, it’s important to see the transformation throughout your journey. I often find people unwilling to truly see themselves and as they say a picture says a thousand words. Pictures remind me why I’m doing what I’m doing, I am able to see the growth in my appearance, in how I feel about myself and so much more. I am also able to notice when I’ve lost sight of the goal and it enables me to recognize the shift and change gears to get back focused.

I want to encourage you to get laser focused on the goals that you want to accomplish in this upcoming new year. I’ll do my best in sharing my journey to help guide you but you have to be willing to take 100% responsibility for what your future looks like. Lately I’ve been telling myself two things: Fear can not go where you’re headed and If you can see it, you can have it. If you’re having a problem with simply starting, begin with telling yourself that. A year from now you’ll be glad you started today. Until next time….
